Change in the Translation Industry:
It is impossible to explain in words how useful translation has been for humans. It has helped us connect with each other when the concept sounded alien. It has destroyed the language barrier and saved people from countless misunderstandings. Without its help, the people of the world would not have had access to various products and services. It has allowed companies to go global and information to be spread out throughout the world in seconds. But it was never perfect and so we kept on working to improve it.
Live translation came along to help people save their time and get urgent services when they are in a hurry. The whole industry shifted to an online system where people can send their documents via email and receive the translation the same way. But we didn’t stop there and started thinking of combining the usefulness of machines with translation. This is where we are now and it’s the place where we have to decide the limit of change. Whether it is worth it to risk the success of the language services on machines? It is a question that has led to much debate but there is still no definite answer to it.
Automated Translations, How Effective Are They?
Do you like it that you can press a couple of buttons and your washing machine will handle everything? Everyone else does too. There are a lot of benefits of smart devices, whether it is an Alexa, a modern TV, or a cooking machine. The world is moving forward way too quickly. People have to work long hours to keep up with the changes in economy. But as a result, they don’t have enough time left for themselves. They can either do household chores, meet friends, or watch a movie in that free time. They can’t do all of it. However, with smart devices taking care of the household chores, people get to save a lot of time which they can use as their ‘me time’.
However, despite the usefulness of smart devices in home setting, machines may not be the solution in every field. If you have ever come across an incorrect translation completed by a machine, you can relate. Automated translations use machines to interpret languages. They are quicker than human interpreters and also free if you use an online tool. Since they are available online, anyone can access them and get their translation easily. But there is an important question to be asked here and that is how effective are automated translations? Can they really replace professionals with years of experience? The simple answer is that they absolutely cannot. In the creative fields, nothing can come close to the work of humans. But that doesn’t mean machines are totally useless in language services industry. There is always a middle ground if we try hard to look for it.
Automated translations cannot give us a hundred percent result therefore they are not reliable in situations where accuracy means the most. However, machines can help interpreters in various ways. They can store translation memory, which will help professionals finish their work quickly. They also have dictionaries to help out interpreters when they are having difficulty finding an appropriate word for something. As long as we don’t rely completely on machines when it comes to language services, we will be alright. We can utilize their services in various ways without letting them handle translations.
